What is a urinary tract infection (UTI)

Urinary tract infections are very common, particularly in women, babies and the elderly.

The causes

Germs (also called bacteria or micro-organisms) do not normally live in the urinary tract. When they enter the urinary tract and multiply, they can cause an infection.

Who is at risk?

Some people are at greater risk of developing urinary tract infections.

In women the urethra is fairly short and straight, making it easier for germs to travel into the bladder.
